CANBERRA, Aug. 25 (Xinhua) — Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said Monday his government will continue to be a "strong advocate" on the world stage for a "two-state solution" to the Middle East conflict.

Speaking on the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) on Monday morning, Mr Albanese said Australia would continue to advocate in international forums for a "two-state solution" in which Palestine and Israel could live "side by side in peace and security".

“We have consistently advocated, both directly to the Israeli government and by voting in international forums, for aid to be allowed into Gaza, consistently advocated for a ceasefire, the release of hostages and the disarmament of Hamas,” he said.

Earlier in August, the Prime Minister announced that Australia would join Canada, France and the UK in formally recognising Palestinian statehood at the 80th session of the UN General Assembly in September.

Asked on Monday whether he had discussed recognizing Palestine with governments of neighboring Pacific nations, including New Zealand, E. Albanese said they would make their own decisions as sovereign states. -0-
