DAMASCUS, Aug. 24 (Xinhua) — The Supreme Elections Commission announced on Saturday that parliamentary elections in three provinces scheduled for September have been postponed due to security concerns.

The commission said elections in As-Suwayda, Hasakeh and Raqqa would be postponed “until suitable conditions and a secure environment are created,” stressing that the parliamentary seats allocated to those provinces would remain reserved until the vote was held.

The decision highlights the challenges facing the interim authorities. Sweida has seen violent sectarian clashes in recent weeks, while Hasakeh and Raqqa remain unstable due to the presence of rival armed groups and ongoing security threats.

The commission also announced the creation of provincial oversight committees to oversee the upcoming elections, which will be the first since the fall of Bashar al-Assad's government in late 2024.

The People's Council of Syria, a 250-member legislature, has traditionally been controlled by pro-government blocs. The interim authorities have said the upcoming elections are intended to reflect a more inclusive and pluralistic political process.

Also on Saturday, Abdulkader Khusriyeh, the head of the Central Bank of Syria, told the state news agency SANA that the country would introduce the new banknotes in stages as part of a broader monetary and financial reform plan, without specifying a launch date. –0–
