HAIKOU, Aug. 24 (Xinhua) — The southern Chinese island province of Hainan on Sunday issued a Level 1 (highest) emergency response as Typhoon Kajiki approached.

As of 8:00 a.m., the typhoon, with wind speeds of up to 38 meters per second, was located about 210 kilometers southeast of Sanya. The storm continues to gain strength and is moving toward the southern coast of the island. It is expected to make landfall or pass near the coast on Sunday afternoon or evening.

A total of 20,728 people were evacuated from potentially dangerous areas. All 30,769 local fishing vessels returned to port or took refuge in safe places, and more than 21,000 crew members were brought ashore.

Local authorities have already transported more than 770,000 units of essential supplies to vulnerable areas. More than 2,800 rescuers are on standby, provided with transport and equipment.

The city of Sanya has imposed a series of measures, suspending classes in schools, businesses, commercial activities, public transport and shipping, and closing scenic areas to visitors.

Residents are urged to avoid non-essential travel, stay away from low-lying areas, temporary structures and the coast, and remain alert to the risk of geological hazards. -0-
