TBILISI, Aug. 24 (Xinhua) — Georgian President Mikheil Kavelashvili on Sunday delivered a speech at a ceremonial event to mark Constitution Day, congratulating the people on the national holiday.

“I would like to congratulate all of Georgia on this day – on August 24, 1995, exactly 30 years ago, the Georgian Parliament adopted the Constitution based on the historical and legal heritage of the first Constitution of 1921. This step laid a solid foundation for the construction of a modern Georgian state,” the president’s congratulatory message reads.

M. Kavelashvili emphasized that the Constitution is a document of the highest legal force, defining the foundations of the relationship between the state, society and the individual.

“The Constitution clearly ensures a balance between freedom, equality and order, the ultimate goal of which is to create equal opportunities for every citizen to strive for security and well-being,” the head of state noted.

The festive event at the presidential palace was attended by Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze, Parliament Speaker Shalva Papuashvili, Tbilisi Mayor Kakha Kaladze, as well as representatives of the legislative, executive and judicial branches of government and honorary guests. –0–
