TOKYO, Aug. 23 (Xinhua) — President of the Republic of Korea (ROK) Lee Jae-myung visited Japan on Saturday and held talks with Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba, Japan's public broadcaster NHK reported.

The leaders agreed to steadily advance bilateral relations, including strengthening strategic security communication, expanding cooperation in emerging sectors such as hydrogen energy and artificial intelligence, and establishing an intergovernmental mechanism to discuss common challenges including regional revitalization, aging populations and disaster prevention.

The interlocutors also committed to expanding the issuance of visas under the “working holiday visa” program in order to facilitate bilateral humanitarian exchanges.

This is Lee Jae-myung's first visit to Japan since he took office as South Korean president in June. He will leave Japan on August 24 for the United States, where he will meet with President Donald Trump. –0–
