BEIJING, Aug. 23 (Xinhua) — South China's Hainan Province on Saturday issued a Level 4 emergency response for possible flooding and strong winds in response to Typhoon Kajiki, the 13th typhoon this year, the Ministry of Emergency Management (MEM) said.
The Ministry of Emergency Situations said the National Flood and Drought Control Headquarters has launched emergency response measures and has sent a task force to the southern province to assist local authorities in dealing with possible consequences of flooding and strong winds.
As of 11 a.m. Saturday, the epicenter of Typhoon Kajiki was located about 650 km east of Sanya City, Hainan Province. According to forecasters, the typhoon will continue to move westward at a speed of 20-25 km/h, gaining strength.
China's National Meteorological Center (NMC) on Saturday issued a yellow alert for Typhoon Kajiki, warning it was likely to make landfall or pass near the southern coast of Hainan Island on Sunday evening.
Heavy rainfall is expected in parts of Hainan Island, as well as Xisha and Zhongsha Islands, from Saturday to Sunday.
