TEHRAN, Aug. 23 (Xinhua) — Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov exchanged views on Friday on the latest developments around the Iranian nuclear issue.

During the telephone conversation, the parties discussed threats from the EU-3 (France, Britain and Germany) to restore international sanctions against Iran ahead of the expiration of UN Security Council Resolution 2231, the Iranian Foreign Ministry said in a statement released on Saturday.

It is reported that the EU3 countries have neither a legal nor an ethical basis for activating the snapback mechanism, which would imply the restoration of all UN Security Council sanctions against Tehran.

The snapback procedure under the 2015 Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) allows world powers to reimpose international sanctions if Iran violates the deal.

The statement added that the ministers also exchanged views on the prospects for nuclear talks between Iran and the West and stressed that UN Security Council Resolution 2231 should expire on October 18 as scheduled. –0–
