BEIRUT, Aug. 22 (Xinhua) — Lebanon began the process of disarming Palestinian refugee camps in the country on Thursday. The Burj al-Barajneh camp in Beirut was the first to hand over weapons to the Lebanese army, said Ramez Dimashkieh, head of the Lebanese-Palestinian Dialogue Committee.

In a statement published by the Elnashra news website, Dimashkiy said: “The first stage of disarmament has begun today. The weapons will be handed over to the Lebanese army for safekeeping.” He added that additional weapons will be collected in Burj al-Barajneh and other camps in the coming weeks.

Lebanese authorities have confirmed that all weapons in the country must be placed under state control and have instructed the Lebanese army to develop a plan to disarm Hezbollah by the end of the month.

After meeting with Lebanese President Joseph Aoun on Thursday, Arab League Assistant Secretary-General Houssam Zaki also expressed support for Lebanon's sovereignty and the state's exclusive control over arms, while calling on Israel to abide by its international obligations and withdraw from the occupied southern territories.

However, according to a recent report by Lebanon's National News Agency, Hezbollah leaders have refused to lay down their arms and have accused Lebanese politicians of putting political survival above national defense. They say that before discussing the movement's weapons, it is first necessary to "remove Israel." -0-
