XINING, Aug. 22 (Xinhua) — Twelve people have been confirmed dead and four others are still missing after cables snapped at a bridge construction site in northwest China's Qinghai Province as of 6 p.m., the emergency response headquarters for the accident said.

The cables broke at around 3:00 a.m. on Friday night on the bridge under construction on the Qinghai section of the Sichuan-Qinghai Railway in Jainka County, Huangnan Tibet Autonomous Prefecture. As a result, the 108-meter-long main rib of the steel beam collapsed. There were 16 workers at the scene at the time of the accident.

By 2:00 p.m., 806 people, 91 vehicles, 27 boats, 1 helicopter and 5 robots had been involved in rescue efforts. Six local hospitals have opened green corridors for medical assistance.

Immediately after receiving the emergency report, the Ministry of Emergency Management of the People's Republic of China sent a task force to the scene to lead the rescue operation. The department called for the location of the workers involved in the accident to be established as soon as possible, and for all forces to be used to search for and rescue people who fell into the water after the cables broke.

There was also a call for the rapid identification of the causes of the incident and the prevention of similar tragedies in the future.

The bridge is a steel truss arch and its main span was expected to be closed by the end of this month. -0-
