JERUSALEM, Aug. 22 (Xinhua) — Israel's prime minister's office on Friday rejected a UN-backed report confirming a famine in Gaza, saying it was an "outright lie."

"Israel does not have a policy of famine. Israel has a policy of preventing famine," Netanyahu's office said in a statement.

The document notes that since the start of the war in October 2023, Israel has allowed about 2 million tons of humanitarian aid into Gaza, which is approximately 1 ton per person.

The statement added that many aid trucks were looted before they reached distribution points, and Israel accused Hamas of stealing humanitarian aid to fund its military activities.

The office added that temporary supply disruptions were addressed through airdrops, sea shipments, secure transport routes and distribution centers operated by U.S. companies.

Meanwhile, famine has been confirmed in Gaza Governorate, which includes Gaza City, where more than half a million people are facing malnutrition, poverty and death in conditions of famine, according to a report released on Friday by the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC), a multilateral initiative involving UN agencies and international non-governmental organizations. The report noted that the famine, first recorded in Gaza City, has now spread as far south as Deir al-Balah and Khan Younis.

IPC estimates that by the end of September, more than 640,000 people, or nearly a third of Gaza's population, will be in a catastrophic situation, with another 1.14 million facing extreme food insecurity.

According to Gaza health officials on Friday, 273 people, including 112 children, have died from hunger and malnutrition in the enclave since the war began. –0–
