JERUSALEM, Aug. 21 (Xinhua) — Israel on Tuesday gave final approval for the construction of a new settlement in the E1 area of the highly disputed occupied West Bank.
The High Planning Council approved the construction of 3,753 housing units, 3,401 of which are in the E1 area of the Maale Adumim settlement. The project will create a continuous settlement line separating the West Bank from East Jerusalem.
The E1 development plan, first proposed in the 1990s, was long frozen due to resistance in Israel and abroad. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu ordered its implementation in 2012, then revived the plan ahead of the 2020 elections.
More than 720,000 Israeli settlers currently live among 3.3 million Palestinians in the West Bank and East Jerusalem captured in the 1967 war. The settlements are considered illegal under international law, including a July 2024 International Court of Justice ruling that found Israel's occupation illegal. –0–
