JAKARTA, Aug. 20 (Xinhua) — Indonesia has detained a large Philippine-flagged fishing vessel on suspicion of illegal fishing in waters north of Papua province, the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries said on Tuesday.
As the Director General of the Department of Marine Resources and Fisheries Supervision, Pung Nugroho Saxono, noted, the largest vessel detained in the last 10 years in terms of both tonnage and net size.
The FV Princess Janice-168 was arrested on Monday with 32 Filipino crew members on board. An inspection revealed that the vessel did not have permits from the Indonesian government and was using a modern 1.3 km long purse seine.
