JOHANNESBURG, Aug. 19 (Xinhua) — South African President Cyril Ramaphosa on Monday received a briefing from his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin on his recent meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump.

On Friday, V. Putin and D. Trump concluded their meeting in Anchorage in the US state of Alaska.

"President Putin expressed satisfaction with the way his talks with President Trump went and the emerging agreement on the peace process," the South African president said in a statement.

S. Ramaphosa highly appreciated the information provided by V. Putin, also emphasizing the need for “more compromise on key issues to achieve lasting peace between Russia and Ukraine.”

The two leaders reiterated their commitment to maintaining open lines of communication and continuing cooperation on issues of mutual interest, the president added.

S. Ramaphosa, along with other African leaders, is also acting as a mediator to end the Russian-Ukrainian conflict.

Earlier, it was reported that the two leaders had spoken on the phone. “Vladimir Putin shared the main results of the Russian-American talks at the highest level in Alaska,” the Kremlin press service noted on Monday, adding that the South African president expressed support for the ongoing diplomatic efforts aimed at a peaceful settlement of the Ukrainian crisis. –0–
