JERUSALEM, Aug. 19 (Xinhua) — A senior Israeli official said Tuesday that Israel is demanding the release of all 50 hostages held in the Gaza Strip. A day earlier, Hamas announced that it had agreed to a ceasefire offer from Qatar and Egypt in exchange for the release of the hostages.
The official, speaking on condition of anonymity, did not directly reject the proposal, but noted that Israel “demands the release of all 50 hostages in accordance with the principles approved by the Israeli security cabinet to end the war.”
"Israel's policy is consistent and has not changed. We are in the final stages of victory over Hamas and will not abandon a single hostage," he said.
Palestinian sources said the draft agreement envisages an exchange of “10 Israeli hostages for 200 Palestinian prisoners.” It also includes measures to provide urgent humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip, including fuel, water and electricity supplies, as well as support for hospitals, bakeries and rescue services. –0–
