BERLIN, Aug. 19 (Xinhua) — German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said on Monday that a meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky could take place within two weeks.

He made this statement at a press conference at the White House, where earlier US President Donald Trump and V. Zelensky, as well as seven European leaders, held multilateral talks on the Ukrainian crisis.

“It was a good meeting,” Merz wrote on the social network X, but warned that the next steps would be more difficult.

“We must put pressure on Russia,” wrote F. Merz, repeating that “a ceasefire is necessary before further negotiations.”

Ahead of the talks, Merz said he “cannot imagine” another round of talks without a ceasefire, noting that it is necessary to begin serious negotiations. However, Trump has repeatedly stated that a ceasefire is not a prerequisite for resolving the crisis.

“Everyone has come to the conclusion that the best way to end the horrific war between Russia and Ukraine is to directly negotiate a peace agreement that ends the war, not just a ceasefire that often fails to hold,” the US leader wrote on Truth Social on Saturday. –0–
