KABUL, Aug. 19 (Xinhua) — Afghanistan's state-owned power company Da Afghanistan Breshna Sherkat (DABS) has signed deals with two firms to generate 160 megawatts of coal-fired power in the northern province of Baghlan, the corporation said on Monday.
The agreements will facilitate the establishment of thermal power plants in the coal-rich Baghlan province, the statement said.
This initiative is an important step towards solving the problem of chronic electricity shortages in Afghanistan, which is forced to purchase electricity from Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, Tajikistan and Iran.
Also a day earlier, Afghanistan signed contracts worth $243 million with investors from Uzbekistan for power transmission and distribution projects, signaling a concerted effort to strengthen the country's energy infrastructure and reduce its dependence on foreign sources of electricity. –0–
