WASHINGTON, Aug. 18 (Xinhua) — U.S. President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky held a bilateral meeting at the White House on Monday.
Answering journalists' questions together with V. Zelensky, D. Trump stated that, in his opinion, Russian President Vladimir Putin wants the Russian-Ukrainian armed conflict to end. The US President assured that he would make efforts together with Ukraine and all parties to ensure peace.
D. Trump noted that progress has been made in resolving the Ukrainian conflict and stated that the security guarantees requested by Ukraine will be provided.
V. Zelensky stated that he supports the idea of ending military actions through diplomatic means and is ready for a trilateral meeting.
European leaders – NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, Italian Prime Minister Giorgio Meloni, Finnish President Alexander Stubb, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz and French President Emmanuel Macron – also arrived at the White House earlier on Monday.
