LA PAZ, Aug. 18 (Xinhua) — Bolivia's Supreme Electoral Court announced Sunday that a second round of presidential elections will be held as no candidate received the required majority in the first round.
Preliminary results published on the court's official website showed that Rodrigo Paz Pereira, candidate of the Christian Democratic Party, and Jorge Quiroga, former president and candidate of the Alianza Libre coalition, came in first and second among eight candidates, with about 32.1 percent and 26.8 percent of the votes, respectively.
To win the election, a presidential candidate must receive more than 50 percent of the vote or more than 40 percent of the vote with an advantage of more than 10 percentage points over the candidate who comes in second.
More than 7.5 million voters cast ballots in Bolivia's election, with a second round expected to take place on October 19. –0–
