JERUSALEM, Aug. 17 (Xinhua) — Israel Defense Forces (IDF) Chief of General Staff Eyal Zamir said Sunday that the army will "soon" launch a new offensive to capture Gaza, the Strip's largest city, despite international warnings about the consequences for the already devastated Palestinian enclave.
E. Zamir made the announcement during an inspection tour of the Gaza Strip, where he held a meeting with senior commanders and outlined plans for the next stage of military operations, the IDF reported.
"We will soon move to the next phase of the operation, code-named 'Gideon's Chariots,'" he said, referring to Israel's resumption of an offensive launched in March after the end of the ceasefire that included a phased release of hostages.
In the coming stage, according to E. Zamir, the army will “continue to intensify the attacks on the Palestinian Hamas movement in Gaza until its final defeat,” deploying “all its forces on land, in the air and at sea.”
The IDF Chief of Staff added that the armed forces have a “moral obligation” to bring home the hostages held in Gaza, both alive and dead.
The announcement came a day after Israel announced plans to relocate residents from Gaza City. –0–
