TOKYO, Aug. 16 (Xinhua) — Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba on Friday expressed "remorse" at an annual memorial ceremony for war dead, but did not link it to Japan's responsibility for aggression against Asian countries during World War II.
Speaking at Tokyo's Nippon Budokan, he said Japan would never again take the path of war and stressed the need to pass on the "painful" memory of the war to future generations as living witnesses continue to age. "Remorse and the lessons learned from that war must be deeply imprinted in our hearts once again," he added.
Ishiba became the first Japanese leader since 2012 to use the word “repentance” at the ceremony. However, local media noted that the object of “repentance” was not “the harm caused to Asian countries,” but rather the process that dragged Japan into the war.
Japanese right-wing organization Nippon Kaigi criticized Ishiba's words, saying that the "repentance" was a political maneuver.
Some forces within the ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) also spoke out against Ishiba's speech, arguing that "Abe's statement" was enough and fearing that the move would "renew apology diplomacy," local media reported.
This year marks the 80th anniversary of Japan's unconditional surrender in World War II. More than 4,500 people attended a national memorial ceremony on Friday. –0–
