MEXICO CITY, Aug. 16 (Xinhua) — "In Mexico, the people rule," Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum said Friday, refuting U.S. President Donald Trump's claim that "Mexico does what we tell it to do."

“President Trump has his own way of speaking, but as I said yesterday, the only ones who govern in Mexico are the people. It’s as simple as that,” Sheinbaum said at her daily press conference.

She titled her post on the social network X: “In Mexico, the people rule.”

Trump spoke at a White House event Thursday to mark the 90th anniversary of the Social Security Act. In his speech, he mentioned Mexico's anti-immigrant measures at its borders to brag about its success in stemming the flow of migrants.

Asked about the deployment of US troops in the southern Caribbean to combat drug cartels, Sheinbaum stressed that Mexico will always defend sovereignty and self-determination in cooperation with Washington.

“We have always supported the position of self-determination for all countries in Latin America and the Caribbean,” the president said, adding that Mexico rejects interventionism and supports diplomacy and international institutions as means of resolving disputes. –0–
