TEHRAN, Aug. 16 (Xinhua) — Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian will set off on a two-day tour of Armenia and Belarus on the evening of August 18.

This was announced by the presidential adviser on political issues Mehdi Sanaei in a post on the social network X.

M. Sanaei noted that the agenda of the visits includes improving bilateral ties with Armenia and Belarus, especially in the field of trade, as well as signing cooperation documents. He added that the trip was initially planned for the end of June, but was postponed.

M. Pezeshkian's visit to Armenia will take place against the backdrop of the signing of a peace agreement on August 8 in Washington between Armenia and Azerbaijan, which have been in conflict over the Nagorno-Karabakh region since 1988.

The peace agreement envisages the creation of a transit corridor through southern Armenia, with exclusive rights to develop the project granted to the United States.

Iran has repeatedly expressed its disagreement with the presence of trans-regional players in the region and warned against changes in the geopolitics and historical borders of the region. –0–
