ISLAMABAD, Aug. 16 (Xinhua) — At least 194 people were killed and 28 others injured in rain-related incidents in Pakistan in the past 24 hours, the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) said on Friday.
The northwestern province of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa was the worst hit, with 180 people killed, followed by Pakistan-controlled Kashmir with nine deaths and the northern region of Gilgit-Baltistan with five, he said.
Officials said flash floods, landslides and house collapses caused by heavy monsoon rains in northern and northwestern districts were to blame for the many casualties.
Flash floods also damaged roads, bridges, houses, schools, water tanks and farmland, said Faizullah Faraq, spokesman for the northern Gilgit-Baltistan region.
According to him, several people are missing, and rescue teams are conducting search operations despite difficult conditions.
Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari expressed grief over the deaths and said all necessary measures were being taken to provide assistance to the victims.
According to official figures, seasonal rains have killed more than 500 people across the country since the end of June. –0–
