KUNMING, Aug. 15 (Xinhua) — Foreign ministers of six Lancang-Mekong River countries on Friday agreed to further deepen cooperation in the next decade to ensure peace and prosperity in the region.
At the 10th Foreign Ministers' Meeting on Lancang-Mekong Cooperation held in Anning, southwest China's Yunnan Province, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said all parties should strive for an upgraded version of Lancang-Mekong cooperation that is united and cooperative, open and mutually beneficial, green and innovative, and peaceful.
Wang Yi, also a member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee, chaired the meeting jointly with Thai Foreign Minister Maris Sangyampongsa. Also attending the meeting were Cambodian Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Prak Sokhon, Lao Foreign Minister Thongsavan Phomvihan, Myanmar Foreign Minister Thanh Swe and Vietnamese Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Bui Thanh Son.
Noting the fruitful results of cooperation in the Lancang-Mekong Basin over the past decade since the mechanism was established, Wang Yi said it has entered the fast lane of comprehensive development and has become the most dynamic and promising cooperation mechanism in the region.
In the turbulent and volatile international environment where hegemonism and power politics dominate and unilateralism and protectionism are once again gaining momentum contrary to the trend, China firmly believes that peace, development, cooperation and mutual benefit are the aspirations of the people and the prevailing trend, he said.
The Chinese Foreign Minister pointed out that China will continue to adhere to the principles of friendship, sincerity, mutual benefit and inclusiveness, bringing more benefits to the Lancang-Mekong countries in the process of Chinese-style modernization.
Wang Yi stressed that the six countries should strengthen high-level strategic coordination, improve the cooperation mechanism in the Lancang-Mekong Basin, and expand cooperation in key areas including agriculture, water resources, environmental protection and transportation and connectivity.
He called for accelerating the introduction of scientific and technological achievements into the real economy, as well as creating and improving mechanisms for interaction in areas such as the digital economy, artificial intelligence and scientific and technological innovation.
The countries should promote cooperation in new energy, including energy storage, electric vehicles and photovoltaic power generation, and strengthen cooperation in areas such as customs, metrology, inspection and quarantine supervision to ensure the stability of regional industrial and supply chains and economic integration, Wang said.
In addition, he continued, it is necessary to deepen cooperation in law enforcement, including promoting the establishment of a platform to protect the safety of overseas citizens and jointly combating cross-border crimes such as online gambling, telecommunications fraud, drug production and trafficking.
The head of the Chinese Foreign Ministry called for expanding humanitarian exchanges, strengthening cooperation in the field of higher and professional education, increasing the number of citizens of the Lancang-Mekong basin countries coming to China for study and internships, and intensifying cooperation in the field of media and think tanks.
All participants in the meeting highly appreciated the Lancang-Mekong cooperation mechanism for the decade of its existence and expressed gratitude to China for its commitment to good-neighborliness and its leading role in promoting cooperation.
In the current complex international environment, Lancang-Mekong countries should adhere to unity and independence, be open and inclusive, and closely cooperate in all areas, the participants noted.
The parties reaffirmed their commitment to multilateralism, maintaining free trade, combating cross-border crime and jointly confronting challenges to ensure peace, stability and prosperity in the region.
The participants unanimously decided to maintain close communication and thoroughly prepare for the 5th Lancang-Mekong Cooperation Mechanism Leaders' Meeting to plan for the next "golden decade" of cooperation. –0–
