St. Petersburg, Aug. 14 (Xinhua) — After a long period of unipolar dominance by the West, the world is entering an era of a more multipolar and just order, and this order will be linked to the development of the Global South, Maria Soloshcheva, deputy director of the Institute of Oriental and African Studies at the National Research University Higher School of Economics in St. Petersburg, told Xinhua News Agency.

According to her, it was during the era of the West's unconditional dominance that the bloodiest military conflicts in human history occurred, and an unprecedented division of countries into rich and poor arose. In addition, the unfair distribution of global resources and material goods put hundreds of millions of people on the brink of physical survival.

The Russian expert emphasized that the future economic, political and cultural development of humanity is connected with the strengthening of such supranational international structures as the SCO, BRICS, ASEAN and others. “The goal of the development of the Global South is not to defeat the Global West, take its place and repeat its mistakes, but to form and make accessible a humanitarian image of the world,” she noted.

The massive rise of the Global South and its contribution to building a multipolar world, in her opinion, should be accompanied by the development of the human personality. In this regard, the expert particularly emphasized the humanitarian content of the Belt and Road Initiative, which has already transformed into a global international movement.

“The Belt and Road is not based on the selfish, egoistic interests of individual states, nations and social groups, but on the desire to generalize the interests of individual peoples into a universal civilizational form – a community with a common destiny for humanity,” said M. Soloshcheva.

According to the Russian expert, the emergence and active work of interstate associations, as well as regional and interregional unions, which include a wide variety of countries, indicate that “globalization from below,” that is, by the will of peoples and countries, is proving to be just as effective as “globalization from above,” when it was led by a group of leading Western countries. –0–
