ANKARA, Aug. 14 (Xinhua) — Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan and visiting Syrian interim government chief diplomat Asaad Hassan al-Shibani on Wednesday accused Israel of being one of the main actors behind the recent violence in Syria's Druze-dominated southern province of As-Suwayda.
“One of the main players behind this grim picture was Israel,” Fidan said at a joint press conference with A.H. al-Shibani after their meeting, adding that Israel’s “expansionist policy” in the region extends to Syria.
Syria “must become a country where all peoples, faiths and cultures are preserved and can live together,” he said. He said Turkey supports Syria’s sovereignty and territorial integrity and shares the Syrian government’s position on promoting inclusivity among the country’s various communities.
A. H. al-Shibani, for his part, accused Israel of provocations in As-Suwayda, adding that Israel’s constant threats are directed against Syria’s sovereignty and affect the security of our citizens.”
Noting the ongoing efforts to divide Syria, he pointed out that the Druze community is an integral part of Syrian society and Damascus remains committed to regional stability.
On July 19, Syria's interim leader Ahmed al-Sharaa declared a ceasefire in As-Suwayda after weeks of sectarian clashes and Israeli strikes. Under the terms of the deal, interim government forces would withdraw from populated areas while local Druze factions and religious leaders would provide internal security.
Despite the ceasefire, fighting has flared up repeatedly, threatening to derail the agreement. Several aid convoys organized by UN agencies and the Syrian Arab Red Crescent have arrived in the governorate in recent days, but renewed violence has reportedly prevented further aid deliveries. –0–
