Aden, Yemen, Aug. 14 (Xinhua) — Yemeni authorities on Wednesday announced a crackdown on smuggling networks of African migrants through the country after more than 90 Ethiopians died in a boat sinking off the coast of the southern province of Abyan in early August.
Abyan police said they would take “strict action against anyone found to be involved in the transport or smuggling of refugees and illegal immigrants from African countries.”
Under the new rules, security forces will be able to seize cars, boats and other vehicles used in smuggling operations. Authorities have also called on local residents to cooperate with security agencies by reporting suspected smugglers or gatherings of undocumented migrants.
The tragedy off the coast of Abyan has left 92 people dead and several missing. The International Organization for Migration has warned that such incidents are likely to continue as long as vulnerable migrants are willing to take the risk of travelling along the so-called Eastern Route from the Horn of Africa to Yemen and on to the Gulf.
Despite a humanitarian crisis and years of conflict, Yemen remains a key transit point for migrants seeking work in the Gulf states. –0–
