WASHINGTON, Aug. 14 (Xinhua) — U.S. President Donald Trump on Wednesday warned that Russia will face "very serious consequences" if Russian President Vladimir Putin refuses to agree to a ceasefire in the ongoing conflict with Ukraine during their upcoming meeting.
After a telephone conversation with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and several European leaders, D. Trump said that if his talks with the Russian leader go smoothly, he hopes to hold a trilateral meeting with V. Putin and V. Zelensky in the near future.
Earlier in the day, US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said Washington could tighten sanctions against Moscow if talks between Trump and Putin do not produce results.
The two presidents are scheduled to meet one-on-one on Friday in Anchorage, the largest city in the U.S. state of Alaska. Trump described the upcoming talks as a “test meeting.” –0–
