ROME, Aug. 13 (Xinhua) — At least 26 migrants were killed and dozens more are missing after two boats capsized off the coast of Lampedusa Island in southern Italy, Italian media and the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) reported on Wednesday.

According to Italian media, the tragedy occurred about 14 nautical miles south of Lampedusa. At about 11:00 local time, a police helicopter spotted the first vessel in distress. By the time rescuers arrived at the scene, the boat had already capsized.

Survivors told rescuers that the second vessel had also sunk. There were about 100 people on board the two boats, 60 of whom reached the shore safely.

To date, rescuers have found the bodies of 26 people, and the search and rescue operation continues.
