BERLIN, Aug. 13 (Xinhua) — German Chancellor Friedrich Merz on Wednesday stressed that the fundamental security interests of Europe and Ukraine must be respected at the upcoming meeting between Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin in Alaska.

F. Merz made the corresponding statement in Berlin at a joint press conference with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, who arrived on a visit to Germany.

F. Merz and V. Zelensky took part in a series of video conference meetings with other European leaders, as well as with US President D. Trump, to discuss the upcoming meeting between D. Trump and V. Putin.

Calling for a ceasefire as a first step, Merz said Ukraine must be at the negotiating table at any subsequent meetings.

He also said that Ukraine is ready to discuss territorial issues, but the starting point should be the “line of contact.” –0–
