KANDAL, Cambodia, Aug. 12 (Xinhua) — Techo International Airport (TIA), which will be the new airport for Phnom Penh, the capital of Cambodia, will be ready for official operation on Sept. 9, Minister Mao Havannal, head of the State Secretariat for Civil Aviation, said on Monday.
According to him, the final test flight of the Airbus A320 aircraft will take place at TIA on Friday, August 15.
“At 07:00 on September 9 local time, we will officially release the document on the opening of the Techo International Airport level 4F,” he told reporters during the final inspection tour of the airport.
However, the official opening ceremony of TIA will be held on October 20 under the patronage of Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet, he added.
“The new 4F airport will be able to handle large aircraft such as the Airbus A380,” Mao Havannall said.
According to him, at the first stage, TIA will be able to serve up to 13 million passengers per year.
Construction of the airport began in 2020. The contractor was China State Construction Engineering Corporation (CSCEC).
The investor in the project, which is worth 1.5 billion US dollars, is Cambodia Airport Investment Co., Ltd. The airport is built on an area of 2.6 thousand hectares in the provinces of Kandal and Takeo in the south of the country, approximately 20 km from the capital Phnom Penh.
TIA is classified as a level 4F airport, the highest in the world.
The chairman of the Asia Pacific Tourism Industry Association Cambodia chapter, Thorn Sinan, said the new airport would enhance Cambodia's image as a modern and accessible travel destination.
“The Techo International Airport will play an important role in shaping Cambodia’s future, strengthening its global presence and supporting sustainable economic growth,” he told Xinhua. “Improved connectivity will attract more international airlines and travelers, positioning Cambodia as a key player in the region.” –0–
