NEW YORK, Aug. 11 (Xinhua) — U.S. President Donald Trump said on Monday that gold would be exempt from tariffs, sending gold futures prices sharply lower.

“Gold will not be subject to duties!” he wrote on the social network Truth Social.

Gold futures prices, backed by deliveries of bars from Switzerland and other key trading and refining hubs, rose sharply on Thursday and Friday on speculation that U.S. customs officials would levy duties on 1-kilogram and 100-ounce gold bars.

Gold futures for August delivery fell more than 2 percent on the New York Mercantile Exchange on Monday.

The United States recently imposed a 39 percent tariff on goods imported from Switzerland, which holds significant gold reserves and plays a key role in settling gold futures on the international market. –0–
