UNITED NATIONS, Aug. 12 (Xinhua) — United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Tuesday appointed 14 young climate leaders to the third term of his Youth Advisory Group on Climate Change, according to a press release from the office of the spokesman for the secretary-general.
As follows from the document, the Secretary-General, recognizing the critical importance of the voice of youth and the contribution of previous members of the Youth Advisory Group, expanded its composition from 7 to 14 members. The justification cited alarming global trends: shrinking civil society space and funding constraints that put young activists at risk and prevent them from fully engaging in climate initiatives.
According to a press release, the group provides the UN Secretary-General with practical and results-oriented recommendations, diverse youth perspectives and concrete proposals to support the world body's work to accelerate global action to tackle the climate crisis.
The group includes representatives from all geographic regions, the statement said. The appointment of the new group, timed to coincide with International Youth Day (12 August), comes at a critical time for climate action: this year marks the 10th anniversary of the Paris Agreement. –0–
