GAZA/CAIRO/AMMAN, Aug. 11 (Xinhua) — At least 42 Palestinians were killed on Sunday in Israeli airstrikes on the Gaza Strip, while the death toll from hunger and malnutrition rose to 217 since the conflict began in October 2023.
Palestinian Civil Defense spokesman in Gaza Mahmoud Bazal told Xinhua that among the victims, 18 were killed while trying to get food near US-backed aid distribution centers inside the enclave, including the Zikim crossing in the north, the Netzarim junction in central Gaza and the southern city of Rafah.
The Israeli army has not yet commented on the incident.
Five deaths due to hunger and malnutrition were recorded in hospitals in the enclave in the past 24 hours, bringing the total to 217, including 100 children, health authorities said in a statement on Sunday.
Hamas's spokesman said only 95 trucks carrying humanitarian aid entered the enclave on Saturday, most of which were looted amid "deliberate security chaos" created "by the Israeli occupation as part of its policy of creating hunger and chaos."
The statement added that in 14 days, a total of 1,210 trucks out of a planned 8,400 entered the Gaza Strip, representing approximately 14 percent of actual needs. –0–
