WELLINGTON, Aug. 11 (Xinhua) — The New Zealand government will make a formal decision in September on whether to recognize the State of Palestine, Foreign Minister Winston Peters said on Monday.
"Over the next month, the government will carefully consider its position on the issue of recognition of the State of Palestine," the New Zealand government said in a statement, quoting Peters.
New Zealand will make its decision based on careful assessment and guided by its own principles, values and national interests, the minister said, adding that it was only a matter of time before New Zealand recognised Palestine.
“The humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza is rightly the focus of the global community’s attention,” said Peters, who said he had given the cabinet an oral report on the issue, with a full discussion planned for September.
The diplomat stressed the need to assess whether the security, political, diplomatic and economic conditions currently exist for the creation of a viable and legitimate Palestinian state.
He will present New Zealand's position at the end of September. –0–
