JERUSALEM, Aug. 11 (Xinhua) — The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) on Sunday struck a tent at the entrance to the Al-Shifa hospital in Gaza City where four reporters from Qatar's Al Jazeera television channel were staying, the channel and medical sources in Gaza reported.
Al Jazeera reports that the Israeli strike killed its journalists Anas al-Sharif and Mohammed Kreika, as well as cameramen Ibrahim Zaher and Mohammed Noufal.
Al-Shifa Hospital Director Mohammed Abu Silmiya told Xinhua that five Palestinians were killed in the Israeli strike.
The Israeli army struck the journalists' tent directly, killing four, Palestinian Civil Defense sources said. The fifth victim remained unidentified because his body was "blown to pieces."
The IDF later stated that A. al-Sharif was killed in Gaza City because of his ties to Hamas.
“A. al-Sharif led a terrorist cell within the Hamas terrorist organization and was responsible for firing rockets at Israeli civilians and IDF soldiers,” the Israeli army said in a statement.
The documents found, including “personnel lists, terrorist training course lists, telephone directories and salary documents,” link the journalist to Hamas, the statement added.
Citing Gaza-based writer and analyst Mohammed Shehada, Al Jazeera reported that “there is no evidence of al-Sharif’s involvement in the fighting.”
Shortly before his death, A. al-Sharif posted a video on his X social media page showing the Gaza night sky tinted red by the bombings, and the sounds of explosions. “Non-stopping bombings,” he wrote. “For two hours now, the Israeli aggression in Gaza City has only intensified.” –0–
