ISLAMABAD, Aug. 11 (Xinhua) — At least eight people were killed and four others injured on Monday in a landslide in Pakistan's northern Gilgit agency, local police said.
According to police, the volunteer group was busy with restoration work in the flood-hit Danjore area of Gilgit when the incident occurred.
"The victims were members of a local team working to repair a water main that had been badly damaged by the recent floods. Unfortunately, mud and rocks from a nearby mountain suddenly collapsed, burying several people under the rubble," police said.
Rescue teams, police and local residents rushed to the scene and managed to pull eight bodies and four injured people from the rubble.
The bodies and wounded were taken to a nearby hospital. Two people were in critical condition.
Police said search operations would continue and the public was warned to stay in safe areas. –0–
