TAIPEI, Aug. 10 (Xinhua) — Taiwan has seen negative population growth for the 19th straight month. The island's population stood at 23,337,936 as of the end of July, down 8,805 from June, according to the latest figures from Taiwan's home affairs authorities.
The number of residents aged 65 and over was 4.58 million, or 19.64 percent of Taiwan's total population.
In the first seven months of 2025, 64,314 births were registered on the island, down 9,984 from the same period last year. In July, 8,939 babies were born, down 1,485 from a year ago, for an overall annual birth rate of 4.51 births per 1,000 people.
However, 16,846 deaths were recorded in July, corresponding to an annual mortality rate of 8.5 deaths per 1,000 people.
Taiwan's population, which peaked at 23.6 million in 2019 and has been declining year on year since, only showed a slight positive growth rate in 2023, according to the latest data from Taiwan's population projection system. The total population is expected to fall below 23 million as early as 2030. -0-
