ISTANBUL, Aug. 10 (Xinhua) — A 6.1-magnitude earthquake jolted Turkey's northwestern Balikesir province on Sunday, local authorities said.

According to Turkey's Disaster and Emergency Management Presidency (AFAD), the tremors were registered in the Sindirgi district at 19:53 local time /16:53 GMT/.

Footage shown by NTV showed the collapsed building and people trying to rescue those trapped under the rubble.

Turkish Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya said on social media X that the earthquake, which was also felt in Istanbul and neighboring provinces, prompted AFAD and all relevant agencies to immediately begin field inspections.

“There have been no reports of any unfavorable situation at this time, and we are closely monitoring the development of the situation,” said A. Yerlikaya. –0–
