LANZHOU, Aug. 9 (Xinhua) — Some 443 people trapped by a mountain torrent in Yuzhong County of northwest China's Gansu Province have been rescued and another 9,828 evacuated, provincial authorities said at a briefing late Friday.

A total of 717 professional rescuers, including those urgently dispatched from neighboring areas, seven specially trained dogs and 16 boats are involved in search and rescue operations at the scene, said Zhang Shenghua, deputy head of the Gansu Provincial Fire and Rescue Team.

According to him, the disaster area is in an extremely difficult situation due to washed-out roads, power supply and communication disruptions, rescuers are using drones to search for people, as well as excavators and other equipment to move them to a safe zone.

Heavy rains that began on the evening of August 7 caused mountain torrents to fall in Yuzhong County, which is under the administrative jurisdiction of Lanzhou City. As of 18:50 on August 8, 10 people were reported dead and 33 missing. According to preliminary data, the disaster area included 8 townships and villages, where road, power and communication facilities were seriously damaged.
