KHARTOUM, Aug. 9 (Xinhua) — At least 16 civilians were killed and eight others were wounded when paramilitary Rapid Reaction Forces (RRF) attacked a village in western Sudan's North Kordofan state, local volunteer groups said on Friday.
“Yesterday /Thursday/ evening, the SRF attacked the village of Markaz al-Ziyadiya in North Kordofan state,” which also left six people missing, the Sudanese Doctors Network said. The organization condemned the “brutal attack,” stressing that it constituted a full-fledged “war crime” and reflected the SRF’s systematic practice of targeting civilians in Sudan.
In addition, the volunteer “Coordination Committee of Resistance in North Kordofan” confirmed that the RSF attack on the village of Markaz al-Ziyadiya left 16 civilians dead, with several others wounded or taken hostage. According to the organization’s statement, the RSF fighters attacked civilians in their homes and looted their property.
The SBR has not yet commented on the incident.
In recent days, clashes have escalated in the Kordofan region, which includes North, West and South Kordofan states, between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the RRF. The latter controls most towns in West Kordofan and is besieging El Obeid, the capital of North Kordofan.
The conflict between the government army and the RSF has been ongoing in Sudan since April 2023. The fighting has killed tens of thousands of people and forced millions to flee their homes to other parts of the country or abroad, exacerbating the humanitarian crisis. –0–
