BEIJING, Aug. 7 (Xinhua) — China expresses deep sorrow over the death of former Romanian President Ion Iliescu, Foreign Ministry spokesman Guo Jiakun said Thursday.

Guo Jiakun pointed out that I. Iliescu, a prominent leader of Romania and an old friend of the Chinese people, made significant contributions to the development of China-Romania relations and the friendly cooperation between the two countries.

“We deeply mourn the passing of former President Iliescu and express our sincere condolences to the Romanian government and people, as well as to the family of the deceased,” the official representative added.

The Romanian government announced that I. Iliescu died on August 5 at the age of 95. He served as the country's president for three terms between 1990 and 2004. –0–
