UNITED NATIONS, Aug. 7 (Xinhua) — UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has expressed his firm belief that any trade wars are destructive and should be avoided, Deputy Spokesman for the UN Secretary-General Farhan Haq said on Thursday.
“This is depressing news,” Mr. Haq said at a daily briefing when asked about the introduction of U.S. tariffs that took effect on Aug. 7.
As F. Hack emphasized, the Secretary-General wants to convey to governments of all countries the understanding that during trade wars it is necessary to take measures to protect the poorest and most vulnerable segments of society, who will certainly suffer due to increased prices.
New US tariffs on dozens of trading partners have raised concerns around the world that the updated tariff rates, ranging from 10 percent to 41 percent, will disrupt international trade. –0–
