KAMPALA, Aug. 6 (Xinhua) — Nineteen people were killed and 13 others injured in a fuel tanker accident in Hoima County in western Uganda, Julius Hakiza, a police spokesman in Albertine Region, told Xinhua by telephone on Wednesday.
He said the accident occurred on Tuesday evening when the tanker was carrying traders from a market in the neighbouring Buliisa district. “The truck failed to brake, lost control, fell and overturned, killing 19 people on the spot,” J. Hakiza said, adding that the injured had been taken to hospital.
The accident could have been caused by overloading, as the truck was carrying both passengers and goods, a police spokesman said.
According to a February report by the Ugandan police, 5,144 people were killed in road accidents in the country in 2024, 4,806 in 2023, and 4,534 in 2022. –0–
