UNITED NATIONS, Aug. 5 (Xinhua) — A senior United Nations official on Tuesday warned against a possible escalation of Israeli military operations in the Gaza Strip.
Recent reports about a possible decision by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to expand Israeli military operations to the entire enclave, if true, are deeply worrying, said Miroslav Jenca, UN Assistant Secretary-General for Europe, Central Asia and the Americas.
"This would have catastrophic consequences for millions of Palestinians and could further endanger the lives of the remaining /Israeli/ hostages in Gaza," Jenca told the Security Council at a briefing.
“International law is clear on this matter. Gaza is and must remain an integral part of a future Palestinian state,” he stressed. –0–
