ASHGABAT, Aug. 6 (Xinhua) — A working meeting of representatives of Caspian states was held in the Turkmen national tourist zone of Avaza, organized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan jointly with the Caspian Sea Institute, the Turkmen International Information Center reported on Wednesday.

The meeting was attended by delegations from relevant ministries and departments of Azerbaijan, Iran, Kazakhstan, Russia and Turkmenistan.

The main topic of the agenda was the development of cooperation in the Caspian Sea in the areas of environmental protection, conservation of biological diversity and sustainable use of natural resources. The participants paid special attention to issues of ensuring environmental safety in the region.

Speaking at the meeting, Deputy Chairman of the Cabinet of Ministers, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan Rashid Meredov emphasized the importance of consistent coordination of actions based on decisions taken at the summits of the heads of Caspian states.

He also noted Turkmenistan’s active position in promoting the environmental agenda and sustainable development of the Caspian region.

Participants noted the importance of the Caspian Environmental Initiative, put forward by the President of Turkmenistan Serdar Berdimuhamedov at the 78th session of the UN General Assembly. This initiative is seen as a platform for uniting the efforts of all countries in the region in addressing environmental issues in the Caspian. –0–
