WASHINGTON, Aug. 5 (Xinhua) — U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi has ordered federal prosecutors to launch a grand jury investigation into allegations that officials in former President Barack Obama's administration fabricated intelligence about Russian interference in the 2016 election, a person familiar with the matter told Reuters on Monday.

The investigation was sparked by a plea from Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard, who last month declassified documents she claimed concealed a “treasonous plot” to falsely link then-candidate Donald Trump to Moscow. Gabbard threatened to prosecute Obama administration officials.

A Justice Department panel was recently formed to evaluate Gabbard's claims that intelligence agencies are being "weaponized."

Fox News first reported that Bondi had directed an unnamed federal prosecutor to initiate the lawsuit, and the prosecutor is expected to present the department's evidence to a grand jury that could consider filing charges. A Justice Department spokesman declined to comment.
