TEHRAN, Aug. 5 (Xinhua) — Former Iranian parliament speaker Ali Larijani has been appointed secretary of the Supreme National Security Council (SNSC), Iran's semi-official Fars News Agency reported on Tuesday.

As noted in the report, A. Larijani was appointed to the relevant position by decree of Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, who heads the Supreme National Security Council.

A. Larijani served as Speaker of the Iranian Parliament from 2008 to 2020.

He is also a senior adviser to Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and has served on the Expediency Discernment Council since 2020.

A. Larijani replaced Ali Akbar Ahmadian, who was the Secretary of the Supreme National Security Council since May 2023.

On August 3, the Supreme National Security Council approved the creation of a national defense council, which will centrally review the country's defense plans and issues of increasing the potential of the Iranian armed forces.

The council is headed by the president and includes the heads of Iran's three branches of government, namely the executive, judicial and legislative branches, as well as the commanders of the armed forces and individual ministers. –0–
