HARBIN, Aug. 4 (Xinhua) — When much of China swelters in the scorching summer heat, the city of Harbin in northeast China's Heilongjiang Province is attracting tourists with a refreshing contrast, offering a cool getaway.
Although the official ice and snow season has ended, the Great World of Ice and Snow theme park in Harbin remains a popular destination. Its indoor pavilion, maintained at minus 10 degrees Celsius, features nine theme zones and 19 feature objects that combine urban culture, artistic creativity and ice innovation.
Tourists can see ice sculpture exhibitions, Asian Winter Games-themed displays and European streetscapes. In addition, simulated snowfall, a giant slide and figure skating performances enhance the immersive experience.
"Harbin residents have moved winter into summer. It's amazing and beautiful. I will definitely tell my friends that Harbin is worth visiting," said Mr. Li from Guangdong Province in southern China.
According to the Harbin Municipal Administration of Culture, Radio, Television and Tourism, from January to June this year, the city received about 86.98 million tourists, and tourism revenue amounted to 137.58 billion yuan (about 19.27 billion U.S. dollars), up 17.8 percent and 14 percent year-on-year, respectively.
"Since Harbin's snow and ice tourism has gained popularity, the snow and ice economy has developed rapidly," said Li Zhuomin, deputy head of the department.
The snow and ice tourism boom has created jobs in construction, maintenance, tourism services and catering, stimulating consumption and economic growth, she said.
Harbin's snow and ice economy is experiencing "surges in development," said Wei Pengju, director of the Institute of Cultural Economics at the Central University of Finance and Economics. Its unique resources and lifestyle play a key role in distinguishing the city from other similar destinations. -0-
