YAOUNDE, Aug. 4 (Xinhua) — At least four separatist militants, including two commanders, have been killed in a military operation in Cameroon's restive southwestern region, security sources said Sunday.
Government forces ambushed and attacked the militants late on Saturday in Maumu area in the English-speaking region, a regional military official said.
"After receiving information from our sources on the ground, our brave soldiers ambushed the separatist terrorists who were regularly patrolling the area and terrorizing civilians. They tried to escape, but our professional troops neutralized them," an official who asked not to be named told Xinhua by phone.
"Two of the four separatist terrorists were responsible for the killing of two civilians in an overnight shootout last month in the town of Buea. We will continue to provide security in the regions and protect civilians," the spokesman added.
Cameroon has sent extra troops to the war-torn English-speaking northwest and southwest regions as the country prepares to hold presidential elections in October.
Government forces have been fighting separatists in these regions since 2017. The separatists want to create an independent state in these regions. –0–
